[February 3, 2006]:
JudithRiver.com will be continuing our survey of the Judith River basin
and other, nearby areas . Volunteers are
invited to participate in this summer’s detailed geologic and paleontologic
survey beginning July 31st, 2006 and continuing through August 11th.
We will base our operation in Lewistown, MT. Day to
day activities will depend on our progress, weather, etc.…
Volunteers are
welcome to participate for a day, a few days, or a week.
In order that we can make connections and plan our activities,
volunteers must register
in advance.
Things you should
know:
The region is
remote. We may be several miles from the
nearest emergency services.
Our planned daily
activities are physically demanding. A
typical day may include:
·
A 20 – 40 mile drive to the
day’s survey area.
·
Hiking up to 3 miles over
rough terrain into a survey area.
·
Additional walking, climbing,
hiking over rugged terrain during the course of the day.
·
Collecting small samples of
shales and sandstones at the direction of survey leaders.
The areas to be
surveyed are in the vicinity of
Lewistown, MT
, in the vicinity of the Missouri River and Judith River.
During August the weather is predictably hot and dry, although periodic
thunderstorms are not uncommon.
Volunteers will be
joining us on our daily trips into the badlands to gather information and make
written observations. Those who agree to
volunteer will be asked to help collect and label small geologic samples, make
GPS (Geographic Positioning System) readings, altimeter readings, and other
light activities. No heavy physical
activities (other than a lot of hiking) are planned.
Watch this space for
more information as summer approaches. If
you wish to inquire, please send e-mail to
